Is It Safe To Take Estrogen And Progestin Supplements For PCOD?

Hi I have PCOS.. I m married for two years now and planning for a kid. But my periods are irregular. I have been having only spotting for the past 2 months and no periods. I have done a pregnancy test too and its negative. I did visit a doctor, she is suggesting me to take estrogen and progestin supplement for three months. But I m not sure if I have to take it because it would be birth control pill and I m scared if would affect my pregnancy later. Please give me some suggestions. It would be of great help.. Thank you.

Hello,
Thank you for writing at HCM.
There are 2 different issues I think are important:
1. irregular periods- PCOD causes irregular periods in many women. Prescribing the birth control pills is done generally to imitate a normal hormonal cycle and the women get periods during that time. After finishing the 3 month period of treatment many women might start to have more regular periods but some will not.
Generally birth control pills do not cause problems with pregnancies latter, studies have shown that they do not effect fertility long term.
2. fertility- If you would like to get pregnant the birth control pills do not play much role. Generally there are some ovarian stimulation tablets (clomifen) that are given to stimulate the ovaries to ovulate. Ovaries in PCOD can be overstimulated so these women will need regular ultrasounds to check ovaries during the time they get clomifen.
I hope this answers your question and is a help to you
