Is It Safe To Take Ferrous Sulfate If Allergic To Medications With Sulfa?

My daughter is allergic to Sulpha based antibiotics and has been diagnosed with low iron (almost anemic) so has been told by her doctor to take an iron suppliment containing ferrous sulphate. Is this OK or could she have a reaction?. (Fyi - I am also allergic to suphonamides and fergon elixir)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

A Test dose of iron injection can be done before giving the entire dose. A small amount of drug can be injected slowly over 5 minutes and observed for at least 15 minutes to one hour to rule out any allergic reactions.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
