Is It Safe To Take Hydrocodone For Slight Nerve Damage And Back Pain?

I had a fall which caused an l3 fracture on May 23rd. I am female, 77 years old, have osteoporosis (take Boniva) and was 100 pounds overwight (now 80 pounds). I think I have little nerve damage but modest sciatica in my left leg. The back pain is still moderate but controlled with minimal hydrocodone (5 mg. daily). Should I expect full or near-full recovery? My doctor is very let s wait and see about this.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, there are various modalities of management for the condition of sciatica through which one gets various degree of relief in symptoms, but usually it is not curative unless definite correction surgery is made. My guidelines at present:
- Particular postural changes as sudden bending, weight lifting should be avoided
- Assisted physiotherapy
- Self exercises with aerobics to allowable degree of range of motion
- Consumption of hydrocodone when conventional NSAID as etoricoxib or others do not respond or contraindicated for use
- Maintain calcium level with adequate diet intake with or without supplements
- Long term consumption of hydrocodone is associated with various ill effects as
@ Receptor accomodation
@ Low response or no response
@ Dependence
@ Constipation
Remain in regular follow up with your consultant for further guidelines.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
