Is It Safe To Take Levothyroxine For Borderline Hypothyroidism?
My free thyroxine results:6/9/15 was .75.And on 9/4/15 was .66.These were low.My TSH levels have been: 1/21/14 was 2.53. 1/20/15 was 3.0. 6/9/15 was 3.04. 9/4/15 was 2.56.These were normal. My doctor feels I am borderline hypothyroidism and should begin 50 mcg levothyroxine. I feel conflicted since most of what read says TSH should be high for this diagnosis.Your thoughts?
Hi, Thank you for choose Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern. You have borderline hypothyroidism (subclinical hypothyroidism), different study have different suggestion for the treatment of this type of hypothyroidism, the treatment of it depend on the symptoms and the level of TSH, many doctors do not consider treatment unless the TSH level is very high (>10mu/L) other decide to initiate the treatment for lower high value of TSH to prevent the risk factors e.g. cardiovascular disease. The Levothyroxine intake is safe when it is taken at the right dose, you should monitor the TSH level during the intake to monitor the dosage, to increase or decrease or maybe stop the Levothyroxine. Hope I give answer to your problem. Feel free to ask me again Take care, Dr .Marsida JANKO
