Is It Safe To Take Lexapro Instead Of Seroquel For Buerger S Disease?

Hello,I have many medical problems. A quick run down was severe Guillan Barre Syndrome, which left me with 8 months of being paralyzed-to the point I wa able to take my first suffle step. After that periphial nuerothopy Cause my chronic pain no matter what meds. I tried.i was at the point of suicide because my daily pain range was 6-8 during the day.and doctors were telling me they don t have a answer for PN, and it had all ready been 7 years. Now I also have developed Burgers Vasculitis in my feet and ankles.plus My Raynauds has flared up.And I was diagnosed 20 years ago with fibro.we found my medicine is much cheaper thru a Canadian RX.The problem is I am out of seroquel now for 2 days. We just have to wait until it comes. I do have a bottle of Lexapro that was accidenly given to me by my u.s. Pharmacist.i am wondering if I should take a Lexapro at night instead of when I would have taken the seroquel? Or should I go without anything? The Lexapro is 10 mg. once a day and I was on Seroquel 20 mg.at bedtime. What do you suggest? Thank you ,Still Hoping

Hi,

Brief answer: It is not advisable to self-substitute one medication for another without first consulting your doctor.

Detailed answer: Seroquel (Quetiapine) and Lexapro (Escitalopram) are drugs used to treat mental/mood disorders. Seroquel is used to in the treatment of depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Lexapro, a drug in the class called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), is used to treat depression and anxiety. These two drugs act in different ways in the body to achieve their desired effects. In certain mood disorders taking a drug not indicated to treat that disorder can have adverse effects. For instance, taking Lexapro can cause a manic episode in patients with bipolar disorder.

Drugs should not be substituted for one another without approval and monitoring by a doctor. I suggest that you talk with your doctor about your medication shortage.

Hope this helps answer your query. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Take care.

Regards,

Dr. Aaron Shapiro
