Is It Safe To Take Macrobid While Having High Cholesterol?

Hi, I just got prescription of Macrobid 100 for my kidney infection, which developed from UTI. I was reading warnings for this drug, and was wondering if it is ok for patients with high cholesterol to take Macrobid. I was diagnosed only recently with high cholesterol, I don t have a good doctor, so not sure what the causes are in my case (I have a very healthy diet and I exercise regularly), but as I understand, it could be related to liver problems. Please, let me know, if I should be concerned. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Yes, it is safe to it while having high cholesterol. Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) is an antibiotic commonly prescribed to treat urinary tract infections.

Its common side effects include dark brown discoloration of urine, stomach upset, neuropathies, emolytic anemia in G6PD deficiency and lung fibrosis on long term therapy.

Its less common side effects include liver dysfunction and allergic reactions. High cholesterol could be due to consuming too much saturated fat found in animal products such as red meat and full-fat dairy products, obesity, lack of exercise, smoking, diabetes and hypothyroidism.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
