Is It Safe To Take Metoprolol For Controlling Increased Heart Rate?

I m not sure you will know the answer but here goes..... I am a 77 yr old white female in very good health for as old as I am. a few years back I was having trouble sleeping and the doctor was giving mer the regular sleep depression meds. he also sent me around to the different doctors for pills to try. nothing was found and then a gynocologist gave me trazedone 150 mg. I am or was only 128 pd and I don t handle meds well so I cut it in half. I went to sleep but about an hour later I woke up with a heart rate of 120 resting. I couldn t get it down. so finally went to a cardiologist who put me thru a barrage of tests and could find nothing so put me on 100 mg of metoprolol which did slow my heart some

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If cardiac work up turned out to be normal for reassurance baseline thyroid function tests may be done. Meanwhile, Metoprolol may be continued in 25 mg and heart rate may be monitored accordingly to keep it between 60-100 per minute. Meanwhile, anti-platelets like aspirin may also be taken along and baseline fasting lipid profile may also be obtained.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
