Hi,

Motilium (domperidone) is a medication that is used to treat nausea and vomiting. It works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain and increasing the motility of the stomach and intestines. It is sometimes used off-label to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroparesis and dyspepsia.

The safety and effectiveness of Motilium for long-term use have been a topic of debate. In some countries, it has been associated with a risk of heart arrhythmias and sudden death, particularly in patients with underlying cardiac conditions or those taking certain medications that can interact with Motilium. In Ireland, Motilium is licensed for short-term use in the treatment of nausea and vomiting. The maximum recommended daily dose is 30mg. It is not licensed for the treatment of generalized mobility dysfunction affecting the stomach and transverse colon.

The decision to prescribe Motilium for long-term use should be made on a case-by-case basis by a qualified healthcare professional who is familiar with the patient's medical history and current medications. Your son's doctor should explain the risks and benefits of Motilium and discuss alternative treatment options.

If you have concerns about the safety and efficacy of Motilium or your son's treatment plan, you should discuss them with his doctor. It may also be helpful to seek a second opinion from a specialist in gastrointestinal disorders.
