Is It Safe To Take Motrin To Treat Swollen Chin After Tooth Extraction?

I had a bottom tooth #21 extracted last Friday. On Sunday the swelling set in in my chin and flower face on that side and has not gone away as of yet. It is very sore and the extraction site does not hurt. Is this normal and how long should I expect this to last? I am taking antibiotics and Motrin. I am not pleased with the oral surgeon that performed the extraction and would rather not ask him anything much less ever return to his office. I can tell you the tooth was infected badly and that is why the extraction had to be done quickly.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query in detail and can very well understand your concerns..

Swelling below the chin after tooth extraction can be due to swollen submental group of lymph nodes which can be due to infection from infected tooth goes into blood causing Septicemia and can infect the regional lymph nodes via lymphatic drainage..

It can take a comparatively longer time for the swelling of lymph nodes to get resolved even after the infection has gone down..

You should however consult a dentist and get evaluated even for other causes like swelling of Submental salivary gland..

For infection antibiotics and for pain motrin are a correct medication but you should get checked up for the exact cause before continuing with the treatment..

Hope you get well soon..
