Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking a new medicine Prednisone. I have only taken two pills for two days. This was given to me on Monday for a swollen. The swelling has gone down but I have been having very high blood pressure (167/88) and my sugar has jumped up, normally it would be 140 or less, just now it is 181. I am concerned that the prednisone is causing this and I need your advise. Blaine Crawford
HI WELCOME TO HCM.I UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERNS. YES, PREDNISONE IS A STEROID AND IT INCREASES BLOOD PRESSURE AND SUGAR LEVELS.USUALLY IT IS GIVEN FOR SHORT DURATION AND BOTH BP AND SUGAR WILL COME TO NORMAL ONCE IT IS STOPPED. FOR MY PATIENTS ON PREDNISONE ,I DO FREQUENT SUGAR AND BP MONITORING.DEPENDING ON RESULTS I INCREASE DOSE OF BP AND SUGAR MEDICINES. I WILL ADVISE YOU TO GO BACK TO YOUR TREATING DOCTOR AND DISCUSS THESE ISSUES HOPE I HAVE ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION.I WILL BE HAPPY TO CLEAR YOUR FURTHER DOUBTS WISH YOU GOOD HEALTH!! DR PRANAY BUDKULE
