General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, osteoarthritis is common concern of age related joint degeneration and secondary changes in joint structures as well as functional aspects of knee, particular weight bearing joint of the lower limb.

As the conventional conservative measures of medicines, intraarticular injection of steroids have not worked, now the last and final curative resort seems to be total knee replacement with prosthesis is most likely.

However, let his anesthetic doctor decide to get him evaluated from anesthetic point of view, whether he can withstand such major surgery at 81 years or not.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
