Is Knee Replacement Surgery The Most Viable Option Here?

My father is 86 years old and he has had knee pain for some years. Now his mobility has deteriorated extensively since the last 3 to 4 months. His latest X Ray of both knees shows "Severed degeneration of both kness with narrowing of joints spaces and Multiple osteophytes. What treatment is available, should he go for knee replacement surgery ?
