Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. My husband is almost 68 years old. Has a heart condition but is check out regularly (last month). He has had swollen feet lately, but today they are badly swollen and up to the knees. I will call the MD tomorrow but I was wondering what has caused the problem.
Noted your short history about your 68 year old husband having edema of both feet and legs up to knees, has a heart condition for which he goes for regular follow up. Other than the heart conditions the other reasons for such edema reaching almost up to knees are as follows: Anemia, Hypoproteinemia, Varicose veins. Deep vein thrombosis and so on. Hence I would advise him the following in such a situation: Consult your Doctor immediately for clinical evaluation, examination so that an appropriate investigations like color doppler can be done along with tests of blood and whichever would be thought necessary. Also watch for the investigations for generalized causes as mentioned above to get corrected if deranged. Continue cardiac care properly. Till then ask him to elevate both lower limbs above heart level in laying down position.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
