Is Long Term Intake Of Laxative Due To Bowel Blockage A Cause For Concern?

I was admitted to the hospital a month ago for severe bowel blockage. I cannot have a bowel movement without a laxative so for a month I have been using dulcolax. I have a gasteroenterologist appt. in 4 days. What should I do? Without them I am afraid I will be back to vomitting and in the hospital again.

Hi,

Long term consumption of purgatives can cause:
- Mineral deficiencies, electrolyte imbalance and dehydration
- Very long term purgatives can lead to habit formation, chronic constipation. Permanent damage to digestive system leading to muscular and nerve damage of the gut.
* Life style changes (high fibers and water intake)
* Treatment of digestive elements (infections, infestations, food allergies)
* Regular exercises and abdominal yoga are the ways to help.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
