Is Long Term Usage Of Prednisone Advisable?

I have been taking between 5 to 10 mg. Prednisone for two years. I have severe osteo arthritis and spinal stenosis, have had both hips, knees and a shoulder replaced. Prednizone helps me to function and every time I try to wean off I have a lot of pain and swelling. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for your query.

No, it is not advisable to take prednisone for such a long unless the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects.
You mentioned having replaced both hips, knees and a shoulder. Where do you currently feel pain?
In cervical stenosis, there are other treatment modalities and options to control pain and prevent neuropathy. The same goes for osteoarthritis.
Long term oral steroids worsen osteoporosis and cause weight gain, fluid retention, reduced immunity, to name a few.
It also creates dependence and withdrawal symptoms. Please consult your physician for better alternatives.
Do not try to stop or wean on your own. You will need other medications to help you deal with the pain and withdrawal symptoms.
Hope I've answered your query.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
