Is Lump Removal Surgery Advisable When Undergoing Blood Transfusions?
Hi. My dad has been living on blood transfusion for over 3 years. Hospitals, where he lives in Nigeria are not able to diagnose what type of blood disease he has. They, also, could not carry out a biopsy to find out if he has leukemia or the like. Recently, a lump was noticed on his chest. So my question is: Is it safe for him to have the lump taken out and examined for cancerous cells? My dad is weak and his system is weak so I m sceptic about him having any form of medical operation. And I also don t know if irritating the lump will cause complications, break out of more lumps, etc.
If he is extremely weak, better to avoid surgery as surgery can lead to extra stress on the body. Better to first achieve hemoglobin level more than 12 then plan for surgery.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Kaushal Bhavsar, Pulmonologist
