Is Mastectomy Recommended For Breast Cancer In An Elderly Person?
My other, 89 years , has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Test & scans indicated that it is small and has not spread beyond the right breast. By the way, she is right-hand. Also, at age 70, she had a lumpectomy. She is very independent as she lives alone. One sister says that with a mastectomy, there is not need for chemotherapy or radiation. Is she correct? What is the recommended treatment? can an 89 year -old have a mastectomy without any treatment? What is involved with the aftercare and rehabilitation?
Treatment of rest cancer depends on stage, the spread of disease, and certain hormone markers.
Surgery is the main stage of treatment while chemotherapy or radiotherapy is sometimes added if a tumour is an advanced stage or spread to other parts of the body but this may not be needed for localised and early stage of tumours.
It is very right that many times removing the breast may be only needed if a tumour is not spread out. So yes sometimes the only mastectomy may be enough.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care

Dr Mahboob Ur Rahman , General & Family Physician
