Is Meaningless Grinning A Symptom Of Schizophrenia?

Hi, I have a brother in law who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He is in his 50s, and has had the condition for decades. Often he suddenly starts grinning, not related to anything being discussed, and often when he is just alone or not engaged in any conversation. Is this a symptom of schizophrenia?
