Is Medication Advisable For Loose Stools In A Toddler?
I have a 3year old that has constipation issues. we have been giving him Merilax everyday. When it becomes too loose we back off. He has not had any for 5 days. His stool is not like diarrhea but very loose that he goes in his pants. Should we just let it run its course or give hime something
Understanding your concern. As per your query your toddler have symptoms of loose stools which seems to be due to viral infection leading to acute gastroenteritis and it could be due to electrolyte imbalance in body. It due to due to overdosage of medications. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid intake of outside food. You should take green leafy vegetable and oral rehydrating solution. You should consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor will examine completely and start treatment accordingly. Usually it will go away by its own in few days , but doctor may prescribe antiviral like acyclovir , anti inflammatory along with drug like sucralfate to solve problem in severe cases .
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
