Is Mental Disease Possible Upon Damage To The Brain?

When I was born I had a stroke at birth because I was not positioned correctly so when my mom pushed I would hit her rib cage... A C section was required.. There was a dent in the left side of my skull and blood along with everything else covered the spot.. After birth I had multiple seizures.. Roughly lasting 3 hours (horrible doctors who didn t pay attention). I was diagnosed with a very slight case of cerebral palsy and heart murmur (both hardly ever noticeable or even occur), along with some learning disabilities and being diagnosed with ADHD (which I have mostly grown out of). I have a normal life roughly as I know being an infant your brain can readjust, which thankfully allows me to walk on 2 feet.. The overall question after giving some background is, am I likely to gain a greater risk of a mental disease later in life due to being half brain dead (literally)? And will I not live as long of a life as I would have liked to?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

No, there is no increased risk of mental disease especially since you have already overcome many obstacles to have a normal life. It also should not have an effect on your long term prognosis or life span.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
