Is Mild Concentration Of Grapefruit Juice Advisable While On Zocor?

I take zocor and know grapefruit isn t suppose to be used. My question is i drink Sunny D in the morning. It only consists of only 2% of orange, tangerine, apple, lime and grapefruit. The 2%is for 40ozs. Since this is only 2% of juice. Would it be safe with the zocor? I just noticed there is a fee which i thought was free. Since I m om disability and on a limited income i cannot afford your services. Sorry. I took up your time

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concern.
A small glass of grapefruit juice taken 4 to 5 hours after taking the Statin like Zocor will most likely not cause a problem.
However, the exact amount of grapefruit juice it takes to have a negative reaction with Statins is unknown. According to the National Health Service, one glass of grapefruit juice could be enough to cause an interaction with some medications. Both fresh and frozen juices have the same effect
Grapefruit juice can decrease the rate of metabolism of Zocor which results in increase plasma concentration of Zocor causing an increased risk of developing side effects such as myopathy (inflammation of the muscles), liver damage. digestive or neurological toxicity.
Hope this answers your query.
A feed back is appreciated.
