Is Mild Cramps And Diarrhea After Taking Misoprostol For Abortion Normal?
Hi, My wife is pregnant by 5 weeks and we consulted a doctor in our locality for info and prescriptions on medical abortion. We were prescribed Unwanted Kit(Mankind Pharma). We were told to take the Mifepristone (200 mg) Orally + Misoprostol (200 mg) Orally and Misoprostol (200 mg) through the Vagina - last night (11 PM - local time). We were asked to take the next set of Misoprostol again after 7 hours, orally and through the vagina. This we did at 6:00 AM this morning. it has been about 2 hours since and my wife has had some mild cramps and some diarrhea this morning and nothing else. Kindly suggest what we could do next and what is to be expected. Is the medicine going take more time to take effect? Do we check with a hospital and gynecologist? This is the first time we are having any kind of abortion done, hence the anxiety. Thank you Harry
I do appreciate your apprehension due to the side effects of the medicines your wife is having.
The dose prescribed to you was according to the WHO guidelines and hence you need not doubt about it.
Misoprostol when taken orally do have side effects like diarrhoea, pain in abdomen. You need not worry about it. Some simpler remedies like oral rehydration, some binding medicine and anti-colicky medicines should help her.
The whole process is usually complete within 72 hours, however not later that 7 days.
You may plan a follow-up visit after 7 days to your obstetrician.
