Is Mild Prominence With Extra-axial Spaces In An Infant A Concern?

Hi Doctor, my granddaughter is 3 months old and both eyes are not tracking as they should so an MRI brain and orbits was performed with and without contrast. She was found to have Mild prominence of the extra-axial spaces and has been sent to a neurologist for head circunference to be monitored. Should this be of concern. Are they thinking Hydrocephalus?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Hydrocephalus is the accumulation of excess fluid around the brain space. The prominence of the extra-axial space does not suggest hydrocephalus. I suggest you to consult your neurologist for clinical assessment, interpretation of MRI brain and thus management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
