Is Nasal Decongestant Advisable Before The Scheduled DIEP Flap Reconstruction Surgery?

I am having a bilateral DIEP flap reconstruction next week (March 22) and got hit with a cold today (stuffy/running nose, headaches, malaise). May I safely take a nasal decongestant to help me sleep, or is the danger of raising my blood pressure too great?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As the next morning, you are going for a surgery under general anesthesia, an intake of anti histamine or other decongestant is strongly not recommended. Rather inhalation of vapors of boiled water with added peppermint oil, covering blanket over head and deep breathing will help great in this regard without any of the ill effects over your surgery.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
