Is Over Dosage Of Guaifenesin A Matter Of Concern In An Alzheimer S Patient?
My husband suffers from mild alzheimer and dementia. He was prescribed guaifenesin A C for couh. I noticed the bottle was almost epty and he doesn not remember if he drinked or dumped in the sink. Shoud i take him to emergency ?. He looks ok right now.
It all depends upon the level of toxicity due to overdose. Guaifenesin is an expectorant which is commonly prescribed for the symptomatic relief of cough with phlegm. Taken in overdose it may cause vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, nervousness, increased heart beats, difficulty in breathing, cold and clammy skin, and sometimes convulsions and hallucination are also being reported. He seems to be alright at this juncture, however he should be taken to the emergency room if he develops the signs and symptoms of toxicity as listed above.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
