Is Pain In Finger After Getting Cut Normal?

My fiancee cut his middle finger last Friday and received 4 stitches..he's been keeping it elevated out of necessity because every time he lowers it it throbs. He can't straighten the finger at all due to sharp pain and he's often seized with uncontrollable, acute pain. Is this normal?
