Is Popping Sound In Left Ribcage Post An Injury Suggestive Of Fracture?

hello Dr. Rynne, I fell about a week ago, bruising my left rib cage in the back. today I moved the wrong way and felt [as well as heard] a pop. now i m in terrible pain and hoping I haven t had a fracture waiting to break. what is your opinion? could the rib have been fractured [hairline] then broken due to movement?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
A bruised rib is weak enough to fracture but a bruised rib can also be re-bruised.

I suggest you see a doctor and get chest x-rays to check for a fracture.

In general, a fractured rib requires no specific treatment except for tincture of time since it heals in about six weeks
