Is Postmenopausal Bright Red To Brownish Vaginal Discharge A Cause For Concern?

I have been having mild to heavy cramping in my lower left side similar to dull menstrual cramps. My period stopped at age 50 I am now 56. Upon my doctor s advice, I had a colonoscopy done but it only revealed a few polyps and internal hemorrhoids. The gastroenterologist said he didn t think the cramping was from either of these things and that it might be irritable bowel syndrome. I have noticed bright red to brownish blood coming from my vagina. What is going on here?

Hi there, I have understood your concern and I will suggest you the best possible treatment options.

First of all do not panic.

Your concern about postmenopausal bleeding is absolutely right.
Since you are menopausal for last 6 yeats, you need to investigate the cause of your vaginal discharge.

Please get a gynecology check up done including per speculum and per vaginal examination. This will help to know about condition of cervix and vagina. Also, any local condition like atrophic vaginitis or local infection of vagina and cervix, can be diagnosed that might be causing the discharge.

I will suggest you to get USG done to know about any structural pathology like fibroids or polyp and also about endometrial thickness.
A PAP smear from cervix will help to rule out cervical cancer or other cytological changes.

Also, diagnostic Hysteroscopy with endometrial biopsy should be done under expert guidance, this will help to rule out any endometrial carcinoma.

I hope this answer helps you.
Thanks.
