General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
i pill is an emergency contraceptive pill. It needs to be taken within 72 hours after an event of unprotected intercourse to prevent pregnancy. Earlier it is taken, the protection seems to be better.
The pill would prevent pregnancy by causing withdrawal bleeding within 3 weeks from the day of its intake. Accordingly, the date and schedule could change.
If the bleeding does not happen by 3 weeks, she needs to take a urine pregnancy test and seek medical attention promptly. The failure rate of use of such pills varies between 10 to 15%.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
