Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking An Emergency Contraceptive Pill?

Hello Doctor, I had sex with my girlfriend, last 3 days ago. 2 days after we had sex, she emdiately take a ECP (“Lady”) so now her next period is next week. Does she need to take the ecp again after her period? Or is it okay, she only take the medicine ( 1st 4 tablets and 4 tablets after 12 hours after the 1st 4 ) once? We only had sex once, and maybe the next will be months or a year again but for now we wont cause we were both busy and dont want her to get pregnant

Hi there, I have understood your concern and I will suggest you the best possible treatment options.

First of all do not panic.

As you might be aware that emergency contraceptive pills are to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex activity.
It helps to prevent unwanted pregnancy in most of the cases.
If your partner has already taken the pills ,then she needs to wait till the onset of her expected date of menses.
She need not take the pills again and if there is no sexual activity in the next cycle then then there is no need of taking the pills in the next cycle.

As you have mentioned that you will be meeting very rarely and do not want to get pregnant, the best and ideal way of contraception will be use of barrier contraceptive method like Condom.
As using emergency contraceptive pill is not free from side effects. It has high dose of progesterone hormone and is known for eratic withdrawal bleeding.
So I will suggest you to have proper and timely use of Condom.

I hope this answer helps you.
Thanks.
