Is Protection Advisable During The First Week Of Contraceptive Pills?

I went to my local clinic the other day to change my birth control pills (Leveste) since they made my period worse than they already were. The nurse in the clinic said to use the new pill, Cilest, as soon as I finished Leveste, but I decided to have the 7 day period break since my pack was almost finished anyway and so I had my period. On Wednesday, I took my first Cilest pack, so I was wondering, since I started different pill, do I have to have protection within the first 7 days?

Hi,

It depends upon on which day of menstrual cycle it is taken. If you start the new pill (cilest) on the first day of your period (day one of your menstrual cycle) you will be protected from pregnancy straight away. You do not need additional contraception. If you start the pill on any other day of your cycle, you will not be protected from pregnancy straight away and will need additional contraception such as condom or diaphragm until you have taken the pill for seven days.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
