Is Radiation Exposure By Repeating An Upper GI Series A Matter Of Concern?

I just had an Upper Gi Barium test performed an the Doctor stopped the test without checking the stomach because a small amount of the Barium solution had entered my Lung and rather than drinking more of the solution to look at the stomach he stopped fearing more of the solution would enter the lung. He said he would check with my DR. and set a date for another type of GI test. Should I be concerned of having too much radiation if another test is performed

Hi,

Radiation exposure for an upper GI series X-ray is relatively less compared to investigations like CT scans. It may be repeated as needed without any serious concerns for radiation exposure.

Dose for upper GI series is 6 mSv and the safe occupational limit for radiation is 30 mSv per year. So even if repeated once, the radiation effects are not a serious concern.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Vivek Chail, Radiologist
