Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my name is Betty. I have a question concerning ovarian cyst. In january 2014 i felt strong crump like andominal pain which lasted for a week..the pain was severe on my left side. My gynecologist recommended a pelvic scan which showed I had an ovarian cyst measuring 18 by 12cm. i was given some painkillers and he suggested sugery stating it was too big to ignore. i seeked another opinion from a different doctor and he put me under a hormonal programme for six months. i was to get a hormonal injection every month and birth control pills for the six months. after the six months elapsed the cyst was gone and i was now dealing with the issue of free fluid. The cyst came back again last and I did the same process and it was gone. this year also in August i started experiencing the same pains and went for a scan again which turned out to show I have a cyst on the left ovary and presence of free fluid in the pouch of douglas(i dont know what this meant). My gyna again has recommended surgery but has placed me under the tramadol painkiller for now.My gyna toldme that it was very normal for every woman to have a cyst in their lifetime. but my concern is is it normal for them to be this frequent and very painful? and what can i do about the situation. I am 23 years of age and I have no kids yet. Thank you.
Ovarian cysts are common and may be single, multiple or may occur as a part of the polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Also, hormonal imbalance may cause ovarian cysts which are which are in most cases small and asymptomatic but sometimes may cause symptoms and require specific treatment especially if cysts are larger than 5cm, bleeding cysts, torsioned or ruptured. The surgical treatment is required.
Also, if there is polycystic syndrome as an underlying cause then hormonal therapy is indicated. Pain is usually placed deep in pelvis on affected side and may be associated with nausea and fever.
To diagnose exact type it you should do an ultrasound and vaginal examination.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
