Is Riding On Roller Coasters Safe For People Having Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation?

I am a 39 year old male with parosyxmal afib. 6 1 180 lbs. The episodes come once every couple of months and I convert back to sinus rhythm on my own with a dose of Flecanide. I am planning on visiting an amusement park tomorrow and riding roller coasters. Do you think this will be safe?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, not it is not safe, due to multiple reasons.

In situations with extreme emotions or excitement, surge of catecholamines can trigger arrhythmias or abnormal heart rhythms so better be avoided to be in such situations repeatedly.

Also, the rapid changes in intrathoracic pressure, etc may also lead to heart rhythms abnormalities.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
