Is Rubbing Alchohol And Applying Neosporin Right Treatment For Taking Off Toenail Halfway, With Bleeding And Pus?

Hello, I stubbed my little toe the other day, and it took off my toenail halfway, it bled some, but I think it became infected because it hurts a lot, and some pus came out. Immediately, I cleaned it with some rubbing alcohol and put some neosporin on it and put a band aid on it. Did I do the right thing?

Hi,

I can understand your concern for broken toenail halfway, with bleeding and pus.

The only precaution you must follow is not to touch, pinch pop or squeeze any of them other wise it can get infected and can cause complications.

If I were your treating dermatologist then would have suggested you to apply plain antibacterial cream such as fusidic acid or mupirocin (latest is retapamulin) and to take pain killer tablet by mouth for reducing the intensity of pain and redness.

Get yourself immunized for tetanus if not done in last 1 year period.
You should meet a doctor for the removal of the nail as you can injure the nail root during self removal and further complications.

Take care.
