Hello, I'm having troubles with my Mirena IUD. It was fitted about 10 months ago and for about 7 days this week I am experiencing severe bloating. Is this normal? Do I need to go to a doctor to refit, or is this simply a 'period'? My stomach has swollen out at least two inches at to the untrained eye it appears I look 2-3 months pregnant.
The Mirena is not known to cause bloating. In your case, the symptoms you describe would have occurred after the Mirena was placed if they were due to the Mirena. There is no reason why the symptoms should have suddenly appeared now, 10 months after you had the Mirena put in. There is most likely another cause for the symptoms you are having. A period is possible, and if that is the case it should resolve soon. If it does not resolve on its own, you should see your doctor and check for other things such as pregnancy (which is extremely rare with the Mirena in place, but still possible), and other hormonal disorders. I hope this was helpful to you. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
