General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry for the health problems your 70 years old friend is going through.

Diverticulosis consists of formation of tiny pockets (sacks) inside the bowel lining. Diverticulitis is characterized by inflammation or infection of these pockets (diverticula).

Diverticulosis does not have any clinical symptom.
While, diverticulitis can be expressed by following symptoms:

- alternating diarrhea (including uncontrollable diarrhea) with constipation
- painful abdominal cramps
- chills and fever

So, I think your friend is going through a diverticulitis attack. Apart medical treatment suggested by her doctor; diet changes are very important too.

Wish fast recovery.
