Is Sharp Back Pain While Taking Deep Breaths A Concern?
I have a sharp pain in my back near my floating rib. I don t know if it s a muscle spasm or what. I injured it 3 days ago and it still hurts. The pain hurts when I laugh and take deep breaths. However there s no discoloration or swelling in the area. I can t sit up out of bed because it hurts so bad. What do you think it is?
The most likely cause of the pain is muscular injury. Even if there is bruising of a rib the treatment would be mostly the same unless there is shortness of breath.
Treatment would generally consist of : (1) avoiding any aggravating factors eg take small breaths instead of deep breaths, use a cough suppressant if you have a cough
(2)anti inflammatory pain killers such as cataflam, naproxen, ibuprofen
(3)if you can pin point the area, apply a warm compress to the area for 15 to 20 mins, 2 to 3 times daily
In most cases, the pain should resolve in 1 to 2 weeks.
I hope this helps
