Is Shortness Of Breath Due To Reduced Diffusing Lung Capacity?

Breathing test shows spirometry is normal, lung volumes are within normal range. Severe decrease in diffusing capacity. I am not a smoker, nor been around smokers. I have shortness of breath and use an inhaler albuterol aerosol 90mcg 3-4 times per day. I take a thyrod pill, blood pressure meds. This meds keeps bp in check. I am 76 years old, self sufficient, drive, etc. overall good health for my age. I need an understanding of this diffusing process with oxygen in lungs entering the blood. Why the shortness of breath?? Need answers. Thank You Doctor for your response.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If shortness of breath and less diffusing capacity is found in a person with normal lung anatomy, then it could be due to the weakness of heart muscles to pump sufficient blood in lungs to enable diffusion of oxygen in the impure blood (mostly due to less blood supply to the heart or caused by long-standing high blood pressure).

You are advised to consult a cardiologist for check-up, investigations to note coronary insufficiency followed by specific treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
