Is Single Umbilical Artery A Cause For Concern?

my grandson, age 7, was born with a single umbilical artery. He has no outward symptoms of any lingering effects of this, but he is playing basketball, soccer, baseball, and is an active swimmer. He engages in about 4 hours/day of physical activity. He has some asthma issues since birth. Should his heart be checked and, if so, what tests are recommended? THANK YOU

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Single umbilical artery may be associated with other chromosomal or birth defects in some children. Such anomalies may be associated with renal disorders. Renal function test and cardiac status can be checked in order to identify abnormalities. Symptomatic treatment is recommended.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
