Is Soreness And Pain In Hands After A Fall Serious?

My son went skating two weeks ago and fell forward very hard catching himself with his hands. He bent his hands back severely, and even though the major pain has subsided, he still has some soreness/pain that keeps him from pitching a baseball and shooting long shots in basketball. I'm wondering if something is not torn/broken, or if this just takes a while to get over...
