Is Spotting During Pregnancy A Cause For Concern?

I am 8 weeks pregnant today. Three days ago I had some brown spotting so my doctor sent me for an ultrasound. The baby was fine. I had another ultrasound today and the baby's heartbeat was 170 but I had some bright red spotting about 30 minutes ago. Should I be worried?

Hi,
Though occasional spotting can sometimes be seen in early pregnancy, repeated occurrence is a cause for concern. You should report the matter to your consultant and follow the instructions issued. Take absolute bed rest and avoid all strenuous activity including sexual intercourse. Serial titres of serum beta-hCG can be performed to assess the progress of the pregnancy. Doubling titres every 2-3 days indicate good progress. This can be coupled with serial sonograms and hormone supplements if needed. Hope this helps.
