Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
A broad spectrum Sunscreen like the one recommended by your doctor is really effective in preventing a sunburn as well as other sun induced skin problems like PMLE (polymorphic light eruption), which is an allergic reaction to sun and Solar Urticaria. However, a sunscreen is not for treating a sunburn. Its role is only to prevent and for that matter it must be used regularly, every 2-3 hours, specially outdoors. A sunscreen should have both UV B as well as UV a coverage in order to qualify as a broad spectrum sunscreen. While UV B part of the electromagnetic spectrum is mainly responsible for a sunburn; both UV A as well as UV B part of the electromagnetic spectrum is responsible for PMLE, Solar Urticaria etc. A sunscreen should have a minimum spf of 30 or more to qualify as a broad spectrum sunscreen. It should be reapplied every 2-3 hours in adequate quantity (1/2 tsf or 3 ml for each arm and 3 ml for face + neck).
