Is Surgery Advisable For Severe Hip Pain?

Hello, I have had significant pain in my hip area for over 2 years which initially I assumed was RA since I received a diagnosis of that in 2003/2005. Typically movement helps my joint stiffness so I walked and jogged frequently despite the hip pain I was experiencing in 2013. Overtime I was unable to run and the pain did not go away. At times I have difficulty walking as well. I finally decided to visit the doctor and an X-ray was ordered. The result was an old alvusion and something about ununited secondary ossification. I asked the doctor but he was not sure and wanted to complete an MRI, which I still have not completed. My question is if I had an avulsion a few years ago from either running regularly and not stretching or falling (fell down the steps) would I be able to heal it still with rest and maybe a brace? I do not want to consider surgery and have minimal insurance due to financial stress of being a single mother and working a low paying job. The pain is becoming unbearable at times but rest helps, I can not always rest it though and have difficulty walking. Please help me if there is anything I can do at this point to heal. Thanks so much.

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
hi,

thank you for providing the brief history of you.

A thorough musculoskeletal assessment is advised.

As I was going through your history I could understand that RA is persisting and you performed jogging as well for long years. Well first need a brief understanding about the RA. RA affects the soft tissues and by this joint comes to risk by which the degenerative changes are faster. When you performed jogging and long walks, the tissues were not supporting the joint and it landed into a avulsion which was unnoticed as you suspected it as a hip pain in general due to RA.

Now keeping all the things aside I will advice you to strengthen the hip muscles. this can be performed not by jogging or running. infact you need to see a physical therapist as you don't wish to undersgo a surgery due to insufficient funds.

with physical therapy you will learn how to strengthen the hip muscles and keep the joint intact. As proper exercises are needed to keep the joint and muscle to optimum functions. Avoid jogging in future as it may lead to more damage to the joint and then the option is only an operative.

I recommend you to consult a physical therapist and get treated accordingly for hip joint and strengthen the muscles of hip too. In later stages request the physical therapist to help you perform body conditioning exercises as it will be an add-on to safe guard the damaged hip joint.

in my clinical practice I advice patents for precision of rehabilitation rather Just blind therapy. I am able to get 99% success in patients with their help and ability to undergo the rehabilitation.
