Is Surgery Effective For Treatment Of Bunion?

It was recommended to me, a 20 year old female, to have bunion surgery. I have mild pain daily, but it does not disrupt my daily tasks. I am going into Nursing, which I realize I will be standing for hours on end, but am unsure as to if this surgery is really worth it. It seems like so many articles I read pretty much give it a 50/50 shot that your foot will be better, or the same/worse. My greatest fear is that I will have more pain and less mobility after surgery than before due to complications. What is your experience with this surgery?

Hi,

Bunions are managed with lifestyle modification or surgery depending on the patient's condition. Modifying things like using appropriate shoes helps.

If the pain is severe at rest or on walking a few steps then with your doctor's advise you can definitely think about other treatment options like surgery.

In your case, as you said it's just mild pain but doesn't disrupt your daily tasks then you can try other options first like wearing appropriate shoes that help to decrease pressure on the joint and avoid wearing high heels.

If the problem of severe pain persists even after that then you should talk to your doctor as surgery is the next option. Surgical removal of the bunion has shown good results as it takes at least 6 months for complete recovery from it including the pain and swelling post surgery if all the things are followed as per your doctor's advice to avoid complications and doing follow-ups till complete healing of the foot.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
