Is Surgery Essential For Crumbled Disc?

hi im a 27 year old active and otherwise healthy female, i started suffering back and leg pain 6 months ago and yesterday was told by my consultant that i have a crumbled disc and that this is unusual for someone as young and that it will result in me needing an operation, is this always the case?
