Is Surgery Only Way To Treat The Fractured Sesmoid Bone?

I had surgery a year ago to remove a bunion, at the time my doctor told me that I had a fractured sesmoid bone in my foot as well, but I hadn't experienced much pain so he left it alone. Now I am feeling increased pain in that area. A recent x-ray showed that it is still broken. I'm wondering if it will ever heal on its own and if surgery is my only option. I have inserts given to me by my doc, but it doesn't seem to help. I'm fairly active, so I don't like the associated pain.
