Is Surgery The Only Way To Cure Recurring Ear Infections?

I had a perforation in my ear for many ears. It is big but was not bothering me, I had some slight loss in hearing but nothing much. This summer I had a couple of ear infections. They got better with antibiotics but now I don t see it completely go away. My doctor is recommending a surgery. Is that the only way ? I don t mind if things go back to where they were, would rather avoid surgery.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have recurring ear infections which could be due to ear infection, earwax accumulation, TMJ problems, eardrum injury or perforation. Need not to worry. I would suggest you not to panic about this. You should go for culture and sensitivity test of ear discharge to know about specific bacteria. You should start with proper antibiotic for that particular bacterial. If ear infection attacks are more than 3-4 per year then you should visit ENT specialist once as it may cause permanent hearing loss, facial palsy, delayed speech development. Surgery is the treatment option in that case. For ear infection you can use ciplox or gatiflox ear drops for local application. You should take syrup gelusil-plus every 4-6 hours for better relief of your symptoms.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

HI
Well come to HCM
I really appreciate your concern, if this is the tympanic perforation then surgery is the only option else medicine has got no role for this, at the most you can have the second opinion form other ENT, hope this information helps.
