Is Swelling In Knees Related To Multiple Sclerosis?

Hi Dr.Rynne, I was diagnosed with MS close to 40 years ago with eye involvement. I have been in remission for all of these years except for a neuroposy in my feet which I am going to address soon. I have been on no medications for these past 40 years. I just went on vacation to Fla. and both knees are extremely sore and somewhat swollen, esp.the right knee. I am wondering if you think there may be a connection with the M.S. I have had knee problems in the past and was operated on arthroscopically a year ago on the right knee. thanks for any light you can shed on this. Ellen

hi,

Thank you for providing the brief history of you.

As mentioned by you, i don't think the swelling is directly related to the MS. As a human being age, there is a degenerative change in the human body. Due to degenerative changes the muscles become weak and the joint space reduces. Also, for your swelling in knee, getting an orthopedic assessment done will be good. An MRI scan may help reveal if any soft tissue injury is present. Post that, a few session of physical therapy will help reduce swelling also, and also help to improve your strength as well. As ageing is a irreversible process only exercises on a later stages are needed to keep the strength in the muscles alive for maintaining the joint space. Once the strength in muscles comes back, the pain and swelling from the knee will be relieved.
