Is Swelling In The Foot Joints A Symptom Of Gout?

I think I have gout. My dad had it and my foot is just killing me. I never had it before. I don t want to go to the doctor tonight or tomorrow because I don t think it s an emergency, but my foot is swollen mainly in the joint area leading to my big toe.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for your query on HCM

"As"per your clinical history is concerned please follow like this -

1)Do a clinical examination by your Doctor[rheumatologist]and to confirm you need few investigations like [uric acid, serum creatinine and ultrasound of joints]

2)Discuss with your treating Doctor about prescription medications like [Colchicine]for pain and medication [allopurinol] to block uric acid production.

Do follow lifestyle modifications like this -

1)Try to keep your fluid intake high. Stay well-hydrated, including plenty of water and try to limit sweetened beverages you drink.

2)Try to limit or avoid alcohol. Discuss with your doctor about whether any amount or type of alcohol is safe for you and try to avoid BEER.

3)Get your protein from low-fat dairy products. Low-fat dairy products may actually have a protective effect against gout, so these are your best-bet protein sources.

4)Try to limit your intake of meat, fish and poultry.

5)Maintain a desirable body weight. Choose portions that allow you to maintain a healthy weight. Losing weight may decrease uric acid levels in your body.

Hope that helps
